My Single Shade Of Gray

supermanI was upstairs when I heard it. The sound of Jace’s scream of horror that resonated throughout the house. I ran down the stairs as quickly as I could to see what had happened to my youngest son. My heart pounded as I slid down the last few steps and ran into the kitchen.

“What’s wrong?!” I asked his sisters who were holding and comforting him as I tried to determine which local emergency room I should take my screaming child to. I didn’t give them a chance to answer as I rushed to my son’s side.

“Jace, Jace, Mommy is here honey. What’s wrong?” No answer.

“What happened to him!” I screamed, finally losing control.

And then he said it, choking on the words while still sobbing, tears streaming down his face.

“What?!” I asked. Surely I’d heard him wrong. Although the sopping wet Man of Steel Superman shirt he had on was all the evidence I needed.

“He got something in his eye and we were trying to rinse it out and now he’s mad that his shirt is wet.” One of his sisters kindly offered the explanation. I’m not sure which one. My brain had completely shut down by then, probably to keep me from going off the deep end. I didn’t utter a word in response. I simply turned around and walked back upstairs while one of my formerly black hair follicles turned a shiny shade of gray.
