About My Family

The Oteys-Jacqueline, Jonacye, AJ, John, Katie and Isaiah

My husband John and I have been married for 13 years and have 5 children-3 boys and 2 girls. Since our names are John and Kate, some of our friends seem to think we should have 3 more children so we can be the new John and Kate plus 8. Um, Violation! I do believe we have met our quota for repopulating the Earth! Right now we are trying to manage our careers–John is an IT Specialist and I am in Claims with dreams of finishing my novel and becoming a full-time writer. We try very hard to come home after a long day and keep things in order all while trying to make time for each other. It’s not always easy but we are still hanging tough so I’m proud.

Jonacye is my step-daughter. She is almost 17 years old and loves to channel her inner Rihanna.

Although she doesn’t live here full-time, she has always been a big part of our family and is very close with her siblings. It is not uncommon for her to log off of her favorite social media site and run around the house playing hide-and-seek with her younger sister and brothers. Jonacye is a great singer and is currently attending a performing arts high school that she had to audition to get in to. Her goal is to attend college and law school after she graduates so that she can become a family attorney someday.

Adrian, or AJ as most people call him, is our oldest son. He’s a 13-year-old junior high student who has dreams of becoming an Army general. He is not happy about having asthma and accuses me of ruining his career any time I take him in for treatment. I usually just give him the ”side eye” and kindly inform him that having an asthma attack in the gas chamber during Basic Training will likely give his secret away.

AJ has many talents, he plays the trumpet, the keyboards, the bass guitar, runs track, plays football and is on the chess team. He hates to lose at anything so we always have to be on the lookout for his cheating whenever we play family games. AJ also likes to make inflammatory comments such as “Mom, I would really like 99 brothers and sisters. Wouldn’t that be fun?” He usually says stuff like that right when I am on the verge of a nuclear meltdown.

Jacqueline is the only girl who lives in the house on a full-time basis. She’s 11 years old and is very artsy. Jacqueline loves to sew and she is constantly making little pillows, shirts, skirts and other items out of any fabric she can find. It is not uncommon for me to see her wearing something that looks strangely like an old curtain I used to have or a missing sheet set that we cannnot find.

Jacqueline is also an awesome artist. I honestly didn’t even realize she could draw until I saw a picture of my living room that she had drawn and left lying around. She is now taking art and sewing classes to enhance her skills. Jacqueline plays the clarinet but she actually spends more time dressing up her little brothers and taking pictures of them in her self-made photo studio. Jacqueline is a concrete thinker and is often confused by sarcasm which is my main form of communication.

Isaiah is our middle son. He is 6 years old and is in fierce competition with his little brother Jace to hang on to the baby brother title. He is an emotional boy so he will laugh really loud, cry really loud, and yell really loud, all at the drop of a hat. Isaiah likes to use Spanish and knows all of his colors, numbers, and some basic words. He likes to sing and can actually whistle whole songs on key. The song he most often requests right now is Whitney Houston’s version of The Star Spangled Banner. Isaiah’s favorite TV show is H2O, a tween program about a group of mermaids with special powers.

I find it hilarious that he watches that show constantly and actually spent an entire morning in church mimicking the mermaid power moves he learned from the show. At least he is finally over his Dora addiction.

Jace is our youngest son. He is 2 years old and is living up to the hype about the “Terrible Two’s” Jace loves hugs and kisses but also likes to fall out on the floor or scratch the person who dares to commit any infraction. He usually won’t come to you if you call him but if you ask for a kiss he’ll come running with his hands outstretched. Jace’s favorite word is “NO” although when someone else uses the word it sends him into an emotional tailspin.

His second favorite word is “MINE” which he uses to describe pretty much everything he can see within a 50 mile radius. Jace also loves music and dancing and will get upset if you change the song he is currently bopping to or if you try to sing a song he is listening to. Jace’s favorite foods are cereal and macaroni and cheese and getting him to eat anything else is usually a battle. His favorite TV shows are Wow Wow Wubbzy and Yo Gabba Gabba.

So that pretty much sums us up. We are a typical American family. We can be chaotic but we love each other and have a great time. I love my family so much and I hope you will come to love them too!
